An In-Depth Look at Steele High School, Schertz, Texas

The mission statement of Steele High School states:

"Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD provides a safe, secure, and challenging learning environment, through the responsible use of all resources, to afford opportunities for all students to realize their individual potential and to become responsible and productive members of society."

To accomplish this mission, Byron P. Steele II High School has excellent academic and athletic programs, and a diverse, dynamic, student population. Attendance in 2014 consisted of 2124 students, almost equally divided between boys and girls with a student teacher ratio of 18.5 to 1. Students consist of the following demographics: (Percents rounded to the nearest whole number.)

  • 44% White
  • 32% Hispanic
  • 15% Black, non-Hispanic
  • 6% multi-racial
  • 3% Asian

Academics

The academic program at Steele provides many opportunities for students to excel. The school has a Gifted and Talented (GT) Program. The school also offers Pre-AP (Advanced Placement) and AP classes. Students can take these classes for two types of credit:

  • Dual Credit – Classes are taught by an instructor affiliated with a local college, and students receive college credit from the sponsoring college when they pass the course.
  • Honors – Courses provide a more rigorous and challenging curriculum, but students do not earn college credit.

The school also participates in the University Interscholastic League, scholarly contests which  “. . . complement the academic curriculum, (and) are designed to motivate students as they acquire higher levels of knowledge, to challenge students to confront issues of importance, and to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills.”  The school also offers an SAT preparation course.

Opening its doors in August of 2005, Byron P. Steele, II High School has distinguished itself among high schools in physical appearance and academics. Steele High School offers more than 50 clubs and organizations on campus, including athletics from the Texas staples of football and volleyball to golf and swimming. Whatever a child’s interest, there is a club, organization, or activity in which they can participate.

Located close to Randolph Air Force Base and serving the suburbs of San Antonio, Steele high school also offers the Air Force ROTC Program.
