Top 5 Quirky DIY Home Decorating Tips

We found some quirky DIY home decorating tips from various home design websites.

Draw on Your Furniture!?!  Your mother always told you not to draw on anything but paper! Why is designer Michael Garvey telling us to do so, then? Look at the below photo, in which Michael used a Sharpie to decorate a pale-colored sofa and two pillows. He even used metallic tape to decorate the top and bottom of the white lampshade in the photo. It’s not something we personally would probably try, but it’s so daring and very sharp! This is DIY home decorating at its finest.

Paint Your Kitchen Utensils!?! Again, going against what Mother said…dip-dying wooden kitchen utensils as seen on The Happy Homebodies’ website to perk up your kitchen.  The result is something subtle yet stunning, especially against a white or neutral backdrop! See the photo below, from the same website:

Staircase Style: Oh we absolutely LOVE the idea of schnazzing up your staircase in the most unique way possible! This is one project in which you can absolutely go nuts (as long as it doesn't detract from the value/appeal of your home in the event you sell)! Check out this series of photo from several designers on the DIY Network website. You can use paint, tile, wallpaper, stencils, stain, textures, and tape to make you feel like you're walking up and down a work of art every day (if that’s your thing).

DIY Breakfast banquet: What a wonderful, relatively easy way to add extreme charm and appeal to your kitchen, especially if you'd like to draw attention to windows and light! You can build these on your own from upper kitchen cabinets in one weekend.  For specific instructions on how to do this awesome project, check out the Better Homes & Gardens website. It’s so pretty and neat, we are thinking of doing this project ourselves! (Photo Credit: Better Homes & Gardens)

A Candle Shrine in Your Fireplace. What a romantic touch! It’s also clean, welcoming, and fresh, especially during the warmer months (most of the year around here!). Visit Sunset.com for 20 other fun DIY projects (this one we found too unique to NOT feature on this blog). (Photo Credit: Sunset.com)

By the way, staging is an integral part of the home-selling process. All of these gorgeous touches could be fantastic in a ready-to-sell home, provided it enhanced and didn't detract from the general design and color scheme of the home. We have many more tips where that came from! Just give us a call at (210) 566-6355 and we'd be happy to share more!
