SCUSISD: Just One Reason the City of Schertz is a Great Place to Raise a Family

There are a lot of great things about the city of Schertz.

The crime rate is low, the cost of living is affordable, and there’s never any short of things to do, see or experience.

But while all these attributes are certainly enviable, the true star feature – the one that makes Schertz one of the most family-friendly cities in the state – is its school district.

The Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District, or SCUSID for short, is one of the top-performing districts in all of Texas.

A Look at SCUCISD & its Schools

With 16 total campuses, SCUCISD boasts eight elementary schools, three middle schools, two junior highs and three high schools. Each one comes with its own unique philosophy and benefits.

Here are a few of the most notable campuses in the district:

  • Samuel Clemens High SchoolSamuel Clemens High School – Though the school serves nearly 2,000 students, the student-to-teacher ratio still remains low. With one teacher for every 18 students, children get hands-on, personalized teaching that helps them learn and grow. The school also boasts an Advanced Placement participation rate of 52 percent, and it offers an on-site International Baccalaureate Program, which is designed to prepare students for college acceptance. In addition to its great educational opportunities, Clemens High School also offers a wide variety of organizations, athletic teams and clubs too.
  • Allison Steele Enhanced Learning Center – An acceptance-only school, the Steele ELC offers a supportive, hands-on educational environment that is designed specifically for struggling and at-risk students. A school counselor’s recommendation, application and interview, as well as minimum test scores and credits, are required before students can attend courses.
  • Byron P. Steele II High School – The newest high school of the bunch, Steele High is located in nearby Cibolo and boasts more than 50 on-campus organizations and clubs. UIL programs are also offered on site, as well as Advanced Placement, dual credit, honors and gifted & talented courses.
  • Green Valley Elementary School – Green Valley is unique in that it uses a model called “The Leader in Me,” which aims to improve teacher effectiveness, student engagement and academic achievement by instilling in children seven core daily “habits.” These include being proactive, planning ahead, active listening, working together and more. On GreatSchools.org, parents and community members have given Green Valley a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.
  • large_SchertzSchertz Elementary School – Aiming to develop children into bilingual and bicultural community members, Schertz Elementary allows students to enroll in a Dual Language program, which continues through the 6th grade. This, coupled with an extremely low student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1, and it’s no wonder some of the district’s best students hail from this historic primary school.
  • Cibolo Valley Elementary – If the latest technology and resources are what you’re looking for Cibolo Valley is the place to be. The newest school in the district, Cibolo Valley just opened its doors in August 2015. The campus offers ESL, a gifted and talented program and a bilingual interventionist.
  • Laura Ingalls Wilder Intermediate School – Rated 5 out of 5 by parents on GreatSchools.org, Wilder Intermediate is one of the top middle schools in all of SCUCISD. Student TAKS scores exceed the state average, and a Dual Language program is available for graduates of Schertz Elementary.
  • Ray D. Corbett Junior High – For a more personalized learning experience, students should look to Corbett Junior High, where the student-teacher ratio is a low 15 to 1. Plus, with an 85-percent proficiency rate in both math and reading, Corbett students are some of the brightest in the bunch. The school also offers GT, National Junior Honor Society, ESL and special education classes.

As a whole, the district was deemed “Recognized” by the Texas Education Agency in 2011, the last year ratings were released. It also contains an agricultural complex, where students can raise and care for livestock, and the Clarence T. Shelton Athletic Complex, which plays hosts to the district’s many sporting events and games year-round.
