In 1961, Schertz high school became part of a newly created independent school district, and in 1967, annexed Universal City. Since the band jackets had the letters SC for Schertz Cibolo, and it would cost too much to change it, a contest was held to name the school using the Initials SC. Samuel Clemens was the winner.
Clemens High School has excellent academic and athletic programs, and a diverse, dynamic, student population. Attendance in 2014 consisted of 2,205 students, with a student teacher ratio of 18.4 to 1.

Academics
The academic program at Clemens provides many opportunities for students to excel. Dual Credit classes are offered through the school’s association with St. Philip’s College. The school has a Gifted and Talented (GT) Program and also offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. This rigorous programs is designed to challenge highly motivated secondary students. To qualify for the IB Diploma, students must:
- Take examinations in six subject areas
- Participate in the Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) Program
- Write an extended essay during the 11th and 12th grade years.
The Diploma candidate must also take a unique course known as Theory of Knowledge (TOK), where students learn to think, apply interrelated concepts, and explore the connections and similarities between the various subjects. Students participating in the IB Diploma program may be able to earn advanced standing or credit at universities worldwide.
Clemens High School has distinguished itself with excellent academics and extracurricular activities. The goal of Clemens is to have 90% of the student population participate in extracurricular activities. To meet this goal, Clemens offer clubs and activities, including athletics for both boys and girls, and nationally recognized honor societies and organizations.

Located close to Randolph Air Force Base, Clemens High School also offers the Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC), recognized and awarded by the Air Force as a Distinguished Unit (Top Performing Program) for "four consecutive years" for outstanding academic, school, and community achievements.
