If you’re like most parents, the summertime comes with mixed emotions. On the one hand, you’ve got warmer weather, longer days and plenty of sun to soak up. But on the other, the kids are also home from school, and that means the constant struggle to entertain, educate and all in all just keep them busy.
Fortunately, living in Schertz makes all of these tasks infinitely easier. With plenty of local resources and lots of area entertainment, summer’s a breeze in this tight-knit Texas town.
Here are just a few of your options:
Music & Movies in the Park
The Schertz Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department is hosting a Music & Movies in the Park series all summer long. Head to Pickrell Park at 7 p.m. June 3 for a Pirate Pool Party, featuring the film “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” along with free swimming, a pirate costume contest and more. Feel free to bring blankets and chairs; concessions will be available for purchase.
Junior Fire Academy
Have a future firefighter in your midst? Send them to Schertz Fire Rescue’s Junior Fire Academy June 12 to 16. Open to 5th and 6th graders, the academy teaches participants about rope rescue, fire streams, HAZMAT response, vehicle extrication, thermal imaging, pumping operations, fire prevention and fire chemistry. They’ll even get hands-on fire extinguisher training.
4th of July Jubilee
The city’s annual Independence Day celebration, the Schertz 4th of July Jubilee is an event your family won’t want to miss. With a parade, carnival, live music, fireworks and a 5K, it’s an all-day party for residents of all ages. The fun goes down at Pickrell Park from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4.
Just Keep Swimming
When you’re stumped for what to do this summer, follow Dory’s advice and “just keep swimming.” Schertz is home to two beautiful community pools—one at Wendy Swan Memorial Park and the other at Pickrell Park—where entry is just $2. You can also get season passes for $40.
The Schertz YMCA offers youth basketball, softball, volleyball, fantasy football, soccer, dance, cheerleading, T-ball, tennis and sports conditioning camps, as well as day camps in science and other specialty academic interests. Just about anything your little one is interested in, the Y has it!
Crescent Bend Nature Park
Enjoy all the great outdoors has to offer at the city’s Crescent Bend Nature Park. With 30 species of trees, 35 species of wildflowers, 200 species of birds, 30 species of butterflies, 10 species of mammals and seven species of snakes, there’s never a dull moment at Crescent Bend.
Take in History
Give your kiddos a fun history lesson by taking them to the city’s Veterans Memorial Plaza. Located at 512 Schertz Parkway, the one-acre plaza boasts a number of monuments, flags, trails and more, honoring the service of all five branches of the military.
Nearby Water Parks & Theme Parks
One of the biggest perks of living in Schertz is that some of the state’s best theme parks are just a few minutes’ drive away. Head to Schlitterbahn or Texas Ski Ranch in nearby New Braunfels or check out SeaWorld, Splashtown or Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio. There are also various zoos, wildlife parks and farms all within short driving distance.
Natural Bridge Caverns
The Natural Bridge Caverns are one of the top attractions in the Schertz area. Climb down into an underground maze of caverns and stone formations, learn about gem and fossil mining, or zoom down zip lines and climb canopies on an outdoor adventure course. An added bonus? The Caverns are just next door to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Park, a drive-through safari where you can feed giraffes, zebra, goats and more.
Hit the Links
Head to the Northcliffe Golf Club for a round of golf. With affordable prices and 19 holes of golf, it’s a great place for anyone from novice to expert. There’s even food and drink if you get hungry along the way.
